A fatal motorcycle accident in Tampa has left two dead, according to a recent News Channel 8 report. The deadly crash happened in the early morning hours on a late November day. At approximately three in the morning, two men were riding on the same motorcycle when they hit a pole and lost control. Sadly, both men were ejected from the motorcycle; they were pronounced dead on the scene.

Motorcycle v. Car Accidents

Logic dictates that motorcycles are more dangerous than cars. Specifically, in a vehicle the driver and passengers have some protection from an auto accident by way of the vehicle frame, seat belts as well as airbags. None of this is present in motorcycles. Not only does a motorcyclist and his or her passenger have the limited protection of a helmet – if it is even being used – but ejection from the bike at a high speed is likely and often results in death.

It is estimated that more than 37,000 people die every year on U.S. roads by the Association for Safe International Road Travel. Injuries are even higher – they account for more than two million temporary or permanent injuries and/or disabilities – as a result of car accidents. The effects of these crashes go beyond the individual, however, as they account for approximately $2.3 billion in economic losses annually. These costs include, but are not limited to lost wages, property damage, and medical expenses.

Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Unfortunately, motorcycles are not as visible or as stable as passenger cars and result in a higher rate of injury and/or death than those involving motor vehicles. To be sure, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that motorcycle accident deaths are as much as 30 times higher than those of car accidents. More than 40 percent of the approximately 4,667 motorcyclists that died in a tragic car accident were in a collision that involved multiple passenger cars. Males are more at risk than females – in fact, according to the NHTSA more than 90 percent of motorcyclists killed were men versus 63 percent that were women.

There are several causes of motorcycle accidents, which account for more than 10 percent of all roadway crashes. Some include speeding, failure to use turning signals, poor/dangerous weather conditions, driving while intoxicated, driving between lanes, inexperienced drivers, and failure to see a motorist.
